In 1776, men of faith with a deep desire to create a new government launched an experiment called "democracy". With foresight, common sense, courage and a desire not to duplicate the fallacies of the government which had oppressed them, they drafted the "Bill of Rights" and followed it up with a "Constitution".

It was their intent to design a new country; one where the people ruled through elected representatives who were part of a system with checks and balances. These included legislative, judicial and executive branches which would work together in compromise with the interest of the entire country as their collective goal.

Instead, America has morphed into a country with an elite ruling class of Senators and Congressmen whose loyalties seem to be political party first, their own longevity second, their constituents third and the interests of the country, our way of life and any sense of a moral center a distant last .

These legislators receive automatic pay raises without regard to the economic condition of our country; exempt themselves from the very laws they impose on the rest of us; and the average $174,000 annual salary is just the tip of the iceberg of the many perks they receive including free parking, free mail, tax rules and retirement plans not available to the general public (even in prison, they still receive their retirement pay!). - and all this with no accountability or performance standards, and very little effective oversight.

The rest of us are held accountable for our decisions and the implementation of them. If we fail, we get fired. All of the political "noise", poor journalism, and finger pointing makes truth very illusive.

This is all the more repressive when fueled by a President who is aloof from governing, not particularly interested in our Constitutional freedoms and whose administration seems at odds with many cherished American values.

Yes, we do have many good men in both parties but they are part of a flawed system hampered because of constant party bickering, conflicting loyalties and afraid to commit to hard decisions.

They spend money we don't have and continue to make financial decisions that no family could afford to make. The duplication of services, waste, fraud, incompetence and cronyism are at an all time high and there is no end in sight.

The refusal of both parties to compromise (the hallmark of an enlightened government) makes term limits finally emerge as a good idea.

The first step in this change of direction is to stop reelecting those already in office and begin again with a new crop of politicians; statesmen who are willing to make the tough decisions for our country's future with that same courageous spirit that first flamed our emergence as a nation.
